Wigan Warriors 2025 season preview

2024 recap

2024 couldn’t have gone any better for the Cherry and Whites as they swept the board, winning all four trophies on offer.

After starting the year with a win over Penrith Panthers to become World Champions, they followed up with Challenge Cup success, a League Leaders’ Shield and the Grand Final to seal the lot.

There’s no WCC in 2025, so they’re already down to just three trophy opportunities, but there’s every chance they’ll claim them all again this year.

2024 position: 1st (Grand Final Winners)

Key signings

George Hirst (Oldham)

Key departures

Mike Cooper (Retired), Willie Isa (Retired), Ryan Hampshire (Released), Tiaki Chan (Salford Red Devils, loan)

Players to watch

After winning the Man of Steel in 2023, Bevan French followed up last year by becoming the first player in history to win Man of the Match in the Grand Final, Challenge Cup Final and WCC. The Warriors’ number six is capable of producing something from nothing, and his individual brilliance could prove the difference again in 2025 in the tight matches.

Junior Nsemba had a breakout year in 2024, picking up the Young Player of the Year award and making his England debut at the end of the year. It’s hard to believe he’s still just 20, but he goes into 2025 with big pressure on him to continue his fine form now that he’s one of Super League’s household names.

Young gun

Jack Farrimond is the latest youngster to come through Wigan’s renowned academy and he’ll be hoping to kick on in 2025. He made nine appearances last year as a more than able deputy for Harry Smith, and this could be the year he starts to edge Smith out of the side.

Our prediction – 1st (Champions)

After last year, it’s hard to look past Wigan for another Grand Final victory. Warrington and Hull KR aren’t too far behind, but when it comes to the crunch, the Cherry and Whites just always seem to have the edge. Injuries and/or complacency are the most likely factors to derail them, but their academy has a knack of producing first team ready players and coach Matty Peet won’t allow the latter to slip in.
