Super League 2025 – Round 1 preview and predictions – part three

One game is taking place on Sunday, and with the squads now named, it’s time for us to take a look with our prediction and betting tips.

Sunday 16th February – Huddersfield Giants vs Warrington Wolves – 3pm – John Smith’s Stadium

This one’s being billed as a battle of the Burgess brothers, which is a bit odd seeing as one’s playing and one’s coaching. Still, anything that gets a few more bums on seats at Huddersfield is worth trying I guess.

The Giants cruised past Championship opposition in the Challenge Cup last weekend, as they saw off Hunslet, 6-34.

As for the Wire, they made light work of Whitehaven, to progress to the next round with a 4-44 win.

Team news

Matty English returns to the Giants squad this weekend, and Danny Richardson’s in line for his first start after arriving on loan from Hull KR. Tom Burgess and Jacob Gagai, meanwhile, should make their league debuts for the club.

On the injuries front, Huddersfield are without a host of first team players. Adam Clune, Sam Halsall, Taane Milne, Liam Sutcliffe and George King are among those missing.

Sam Powell returns from injury for Warrington this week, while Oli Leyland and Dan Russell could make their Super League debuts for the club.

Our prediction – Huddersfield Giants 6-14 Warrington Wolves

Leigh’s astonishing 0-1 win over Wigan on Thursday night has meant I’m being a bit more cautious with my predictions for round one. That being said, I can’t see anything other than a Warrington win, but perhaps this will be tighter than I first thought.

Betting tips

Matt Dufty and Matty Ashton are both priced at 4/1 to be the first away tryscorer, so even betting on both of them would earn a tidy little profit, despite one of them losing out.

For the Giants, Adam Swift is their biggest danger, and he’s 6/4 to score anytime, which looks a good shout.
