With just over two weeks to go until the new season, now’s the perfect time to cast our eye over the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to 2025’s kits.

Castleford Tigers

Cas have nailed it again when it comes to their home kit. Last year’s didn’t have enough amber for my liking, but this one’s spot on, and I’m a big fan of the collar – 9/10

Away

I’m not too sure about this one. Again, I like the collar, but the colours are a bit of a mish-mash, which don’t scream Castleford. It’s better than last year’s effort, but could’ve been so much better – 6/10

Catalans Dragons

Home

I like this. Simple but effective here from the Dragons, and the lack of sponsor really adds to it, although I’m not sure that’s deliberate – 8/10

Away

It looks like something a cyclist would go past you in, and they’ve even added tyre marks on the front for good measure. Also, the more you look at it, the more it looks like one shirt over the other. Just awful. – 1/10

Third

Hmm, another one that I’m unsure about. I quite like the colour scheme, but writing Dragons across the front just makes it look like a top that a bad kids’ football team would wear. Disappointing – 4/10

Huddersfield Giants

Home

Nothing too over the top here, and a nice collar again from Oxen. A solid effort from the Giants without blowing me away – 6/10

Away

Oxen clearly love to experiment a bit when it comes to away shirts, hence this concoction. I’m not a big fan, but compared to last year’s effort, it’s a big improvement – 5/10

Hull FC

Home

I do like a no nonsense shirt, and for that reason, this one hits the mark. I preferred last year’s, but given how bad the Black and Whites were in 2024, they’ll hope to have happier memories in this one – 8/10

Away

It doesn’t scream Hull, but I do quite like this one. Maybe it’s because the pattern reminds me of a swimming pool, but whatever it is, something’s drawing me towards it – 7/10

Third

Another one of my personal favourites for 2025. The only thing putting me off is the background pattern, which takes away from the black. If it was solid black then it’d be a 10/10, but that knocks a point off – 9/10

Hull KR

Home

I’ll say this for Oxen, they’ve really nailed the collars this year. The Robins crest in the centre is a great touch, and this is just an all-round top shirt – 9/10

Away

Another Oxen away shirt, and another kit designer who’s been let loose with the crayons. It just reminds me of those Parma Violet sweets that I only eat when I’ve had all the good ones but still need a sugar fix. Not great – 4/10

Third

This one could go down in the hall of fame. It’s basically a Paris St Germain football shirt, and for that reason it stands out more than most this year. They should have just made this the away kit, and used that as a third if they had to – 10/10

Leeds Rhinos

Home

I’ve got a lot of time for this throwback, which takes me back to the late noughties. And the fact Ryan Hall will be wearing it again this year is just the icing on the cake – 9/10

Away

The more I look at this, the more it’s growing on me, but I’m still not sure. I think it might be the blue tinge on the sleeves putting me off, but overall this is probably the best Oxen away shirt – 7/10

Heritage

Another great effort here, but as with Hull KR, why isn’t this just the away shirt? Either way, it’s another throwback effort, which I’m a fan of – 8/10

Leigh Leopards

Home

As with most Leigh shirts since the re-brand, this one’s so bad it’s good. Special mention to the Leopards for getting Jet2 on board (pun intended) as a sponsor too. It’s about time we saw some big-name companies in RL – 8/10

Away

I really like this, but it would work better without the eyes. The colours work brilliantly though, and it’s a bit less gaudy than the home shirt – 8/10

Salford Red Devils

Home

I’m going to completely contradict myself here, but I don’t like how basic this is. Normally I love a straightforward home shirt, but this one’s not even got a hint of anything else going on. The only ‘added feature’ is the line across the top, but that’s not adding a great deal – 5/10

Away

Much the same as the home shirt, there’s not a lot going on with this. Then again, the background pattern is clearer to see, and the gold font works well with the blue. Marginally better than the home shirt – 6/10

St Helens

Home

There’s not quite enough red on this for me. I don’t like the fact the badge has been shifted to make way for the manufacturer either, they should definitely be the other way round. I like the big V though. Even at a quick glance you know exactly whose kit this is – 6/10

Away

This is definitely better than the home shirt, and it’s very clearly a Saints shirt again. I just can’t get over the badge being in the middle like it’s been wedged in among the sponsors – 7/10

Wakefield Trinity

Home

The designers have got this one spot on. Not too simple, not too complicated, and once again, it’s quite clearly a Wakefield shirt the moment you see it – 8/10

Away

As above with the home shirt, this one’s right on point. Almost symmetrical with the home shirt too, which is always a plus for me – 8/10

Warrington Wolves

Home

I just can’t get on board with this one. The colours should be the other way round and then it would be ok, but a Wire home shirt that isn’t predominantly blue just doesn’t look right to me – 5/10

Away

I can only imagine that Oxen had a load of leftover Parma Violet fabric from the Hull KR away shirt and flogged it to O’Neills on the cheap. That’s the only explanation for this dreadful away shirt, which has somehow topped last year’s effort for being so bad – 2/10

Las Vegas

Of course, Wire had to bring out a special Vegas shirt, and this one’s a winner. I love the subtlety of it, with the stars and stripes in the background and the customised club badge. Great job – 8/10

Wigan Warriors

Home

Wigan have nailed it with this one. I’m a big fan of the red sleeves, and the gold trim is a lovely little touch – 8/10

Away

This one’s ok without being particularly special. Feels more functional than anything, and the designers clearly spent more time focusing on the Vegas kit – 6/10

Third

From a design point of view, I’m not a fan of this at all. However, a percentage of the profits are going to the hospice where Liam Marshall’s mum spent her final few weeks before passing away, and her name is printed on every shirt too, so for those reasons this one scores top marks – 10/10

Las Vegas

This might just be my favourite of the lot this year. When I first saw it I thought it looked tacky, but that’s exactly why it’s so good. Whether the Americans will buy into it or not is another thing, but it sold out pretty quickly when it went on sale for Wigan fans – 10/10
