North Queensland Cowboys 2026 season preview

2025 recap

2025 was a huge disappointment for the Cowboys, who finished a lowly 12th after a semi-final appearance in 2024.

They dropped out of the top eight after Round 14 and never made it back in. They also had the second-worst defence in the whole competition.

2025 position: 12th

Key signings

Reed Mahoney (Canterbury Bankstown-Bulldogs), James Walsh (The Dolphins), Matt Lodge (Manly Sea Eagles), Soni Luke (Penrith Panthers)

Key departures

Reece Robson (Sydney Roosters), Tom Duffy (Brisbane Broncos), Jordan McLean (Retired), Semi Valemei (Castleford Tigers), Karl Lawton (Hull KR)

Players to watch

Jason Taumalolo only managed 10 appearances in 2025, and the $10m man needs a big 2026. Injuries have taken their toll on the 32-year-old, but if he can stay fit, he can still be one of the competition’s most barnstorming forwards.

Jaxon Purdue had a breakthrough campaign in 2025, and crossed for 14 tries. The 20-year-old won’t be an unknown quantity this year though, so I’m interested to see how he copes with the increased attention from opposition defences. I think he’ll continue to go from strength to strength though.

Young gun

Kaiden Lahrs made his first grade debut in 2025, and eventually played seven games across the year. The 20-year-old prop has some stiff competition in the front row, but he’s been named in the top 30 squad and should add to his tally this season.

Our prediction – 12th

On their day, the Cowboys are a match for anybody and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them comfortably make the top eight. That said, I can only go on last year’s performances and their recruitment in the off-season – neother of which have blown me away. I’m expecting them to finish outside the Finals spots again.
