Huddersfield Giants 2025 season preview

2024 recap

After an underwhelming 2023, it was more of the same in 2024 for Huddersfield as they finished in the same spot and just two points worse off. A play-off spot never looked close, and coach Ian Watson’s sacking during the year had felt inevitable for some time. Interim coach Luke Robinson took over for the final 11 games, and he’s got the job full-time this year.

2024 position: 9th

Key signings

Tom Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Zac Woolford (Canberra Raiders), Liam Sutcliffe (Hull FC), George King (Hull KR), Jacob Gagai (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Taane Milne (South Sydney Rabbitohs)

Key departures

Innes Senior (Castleford Tigers), Esan Marsters (Salford Red Devils), Olly Russell (Wakefield Trinity), Chris Hill (Salford Red Devils), Sebastine Ikahihifo (Released), Kevin Naiqama (Retired), Adam Milner (Oldham RLFC), Jake Connor (Leeds Rhinos), Andre Savelio (Doncaster RLFC)

Players to watch

After 12 years in the NRL and finishing up as South Sydney Rabbitohs’ second-highest appearance holder, Tom Burgess is finally back in Super League. The 32 year-old’s best days are behind him, but he can still be a powerful presence in the Giants’ forward pack if he stays fit.

Another one of the Giants’ three arrivals from the Rabbitohs is Fiji international Taane Milne. The versatile Milne was a utility for much of his time at Souths and never quite nailed down a starting spot, but with close to 100 NRL games under his belt, he could be a handy addition.

Young gun

Jack Billington made three appearances for the Giants in 2024, and the powerful young prop will be hoping for many more this campaign. And with the likes of Sebastine Ikahihifo and Chris Hill leaving the club in the off-season, he should get plenty of chances.

Our prediction – 11th

I’m expecting even less from the Giants than last year. On paper, some of the new signings look like decent additions, but I can’t see any of them having a major impact. As for coach Luke Robinson, in his 11 games in charge during his interim spell, the team only picked up four wins, and I can see them picking up where they left off.
