Salford Red Devils 2025 season preview

2024 recap

Salford continued to defy the odds in 2024 as they saw off some much bigger clubs to secure a top six finish. The loss of arguably their two best players at the start of the year was enough to put them comfortably in the bottom half of most people’s predictions, but a superb season ended with a fourth-placed finish and a 6-14 loss to Leigh in the play-offs.

2024 position: 4th

Key signings

Esan Marsters (Huddersfield Giants), Sam Davis (London Broncos), Chris Hill (Huddersfield Giants), Joe Bullock (Warrington Wolves), Justin Sangare (Leeds Rhinos), Tiaki Chan (Wigan Warriors)

Key departures

Amir Bourouh (Hull FC), Ollie Partington (Catalans Dragons), Cade Cust (Hull FC), Adam Sidlow (Swinton Lions), Andrew Dixon (Retired), Gil Dudson (Oldham RLFC)

Players to watch

Marc Sneyd remains at the heart of Salford’s team, for now at least. Due to the club’s ongoing financial issues, it’s touch and go whether he’s still there when the new season kicks off, but if he is, then his presence will go a long way towards keeping the Red Devils off the foot of the ladder, and potentially pushing for another top six finish.

Chris Hill will go around again in 2025 at the grand age of 37, and he starts the year just two appearances shy of 300 in Super League. The former England prop is a new arrival this year from Huddersfield Giants, and his experience will be vital in leading from the front.

Young gun

With perhaps the thinnest squad in the competition, 20 year-old halfback Kai Morgan could be called upon if injuries hit. Morgan played six games in 2024, and he’ll be eager to add to that tally this time around.

Our prediction – 9th

Every year I underestimate Salford and every year they prove me wrong, but I still think this could be the year when things catch up with them. On paper they have a pretty strong 17, but one or two injuries and suspensions could seriously derail them, although I’d still back them to stay comfortably off the bottom of the table.
