Gold Coast Titans 2025 season review
Overview
For a team who looked destined to finish bottom of the ladder, the Titans can take some comfort from the fact they climbed up a place in Round 27.
Their 36-28 win over the Tigers on the final weekend saw them escape a first wooden spoon since 2019, at the expense of the Knights. Aside from that, there was very little to cheer for the Gold Coast in 2025, as they picked up just six wins and had the worst defence in the entire NRL.
Their attack on the other hand sparkled at times, and they outscored six other teams, including the 6th-placed Warriors, although no team spent more time at the bottom of the ladder – 13 weeks, all in all.
Highs
A 30-12 away win over the Roosters in Round 3 meant the Titans started the year with a 2-1 record. There was a big 28-8 win over Manly in Round 13 as well, while scoring points was never an issue for the Gold Coast, who reached double figures in every game they played – even Premiership winners Brisbane failed to do that on three occasions.
Their come-from-behind victory over the Knights in Round 10 will live long in the memory too, as they overcame a 20-point deficit to win 24-20.
Beau Fermor’s Origin call-up was another highlight for the club, and just reward for his efforts in a Titans jersey this year.
Lows
18 defeats in 24 games and 719 points conceded – at an average of 30 per game – sort of sums up the Titans’ season.
In total, they conceded 40 points or more on five occasions, while their poor results ultimately led to coach Des Hasler losing his job.
2025 RLB Player of the Year – Jayden Campbell
The Titans’ five-eighth continues to grow in stature each year, and his seven tries and nine try assists played a big part in their exciting attack. He’s proving himself as a decent goalkicker too, with a success rate above 80% for the year. If the Gold Coast are to kick on next year, he’ll be at the heart of it.
Reasons to be positive in 2026
The Titans are another team with a new coach coming in – Josh Hannay – and the rookie’s first job will be to shore up their leaky defence.
If he can fix that, the attack virtually takes care of itself, and the Titans can begin to start looking up rather than down next season. He’ll also have Brian McDermott joining him as an assistant – a four-time Super League-winning coach.
Recruitment-wise, things have been very quiet on the Gold Coast so far, but I’d expect a couple of additions by the time 2026 rolls around.
My 2025 prediction – 17th
Final 2025 position – 16th (+1)
I’m pretty pleased with this one, as it was only a comeback win on the final day that prevented this coming to fruition. I said in my preview for the year that I’d be amazed to see them finish any higher than 14th, and that never looked likely.
