St Helens 2025 season preview

2024 recap

It wasn’t the St Helens we’ve been used to in 2025 as they had their joint-worst finish in the Super League era. That was still enough for a play-off spot though, and they very nearly beat Warrington to set up a semi-final clash with eventual runners-up Hull KR. An agonising 23-22 defeat in week one saw their season come to an end, but they at least finished with their heads held high after a challenging campaign.

2024 position: 6th

Key signings

Tristan Sailor (Brisbane Broncos), Kyle Feldt (North Queensland Cowboys), Lewis Murphy (Sydney Roosters)

Key departures

Lewis Dodd (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Tommy Makinson (Catalans Dragons), Sam Royle (Released), Sione Mata’utia (Retired), Waqa Blake (Bradford Bulls), Ben Lane (Released), McKenzie Buckley (Widnes Vikings)

Players to watch

Tristan Sailor’s had a stop-start career in the NRL, but he has the ability to light up Super League in 2025. Still only 26, the former Brisbane Broncos man has been given the number six jersey, which is a clear indication he’ll be playing in the halves this year, instead of his more customary fullback role. Expect a strong running game though, and lots of off-the-cuff plays.

Lewis Murphy will be looking to hit the ground running after a frustrating year-long stint with the Sydney Roosters. The 22 year-old didn’t make an appearance in the NRL, but the lightning quick winger impressed during his time at Wakefield and has an impressive strike rate from his first spell in Super League.

Young gun

Harry Robertson was one of Saints’ standouts during a challenging last few weeks of the season in 2024. The 19 year-old was impressive on debut against arch rivals Wigan, and went on to make nine appearances in total. He’s unlikely to start the year in the team, but if he gets a chance, expect him to make the most of it.

Our prediction – 5th

Despite their struggles in 2024, I still can’t imagine St Helens not making the play-offs. That being said, other teams have definitely caught up and overtaken them in the past 12 months or so, and I don’t see them winning the whole competition, but as the saying goes, “Never write off the Saints.”
